A Snapshot of the Within Word Pattern Stage

They are beginning to explore using long-vowel patterns, just are inconsistent with their accurateness.

Share Word Search Findings!
My students consummate "blind" word searches based on their word study lists. This means that they are NOT given a word listing earlier trying to find their words in a word search. I may allow students to work side-past-side with a partner to modify this activity for students in the Within Give-and-take Design Spellers group. Prior to meeting with me in a minor grouping, they accept spent 1-two days searching for words in their discussion searches and sorting them into categories that brand sense to them.
When students gather their word study notebooks and meet at our minor grouping tabular array, they know to turn to their word searches and go along looking for possible words. When I am ready to starting time the meeting, I ask for volunteers to share the words they found. As students share words, I create a give-and-take sort on chart paper asking students to help me sort each new word.

ACTIVITIES for Inside Word Pattern Spellers
Long Vowels
GENERATE WORDS: Students in the Within Word Pattern phase need to spend a lot of time working with mutual long vowel patterns and generating words in a diversity of ways. Filling in missing vowels among a grouping of given long vowel patterns helps students make generalizations about spelling rules and builds a potent foundation of understanding about long vowels.
After introducing and working with several of the long vowel patterns, brand word cards (you can fifty-fifty have students make these on index cards) with the vowel patterns students have been working with and so several consonants and consonant blends (yous could likewise use magnetic letters for this). Have students employ the cards from each category to create as many words as they can in a fix corporeality of time. Students must tape each give-and-take on a recording sheet or whiteboard. BLIND SORTS: I find blind sorts to exist super helpful when working with long vowel patterns. A fun spin on bullheaded sorts is Sound Bingo. Create a Bingo board that has alternate spellings represented in each box of the long vowel sound you are working on (i.e. words that have the "oe", simply are represented by a variety of spellings such as o, oa, ow, o-due east, and oe). Homophones and Homonymns
READ ALOUD: I beloved to introduce the concept of homophones and homonyms with a good picture book. The King Who Rained by Fred Gwynne is one of my favorites to use for homophones. To introduce homonyms, my go-to read aloud is Eight Ate: A Banquet of Homonym Riddles by Marvin Terban. In one case students have started to piece of work with both homophones and homonyms, I love How Much Can A Bare Behave Bear? What are Homonyms and Homophones? by Brian Cleary because information technology really teaches the divergence betwixt homonyms and homophones (which tin can get disruptive for kiddos in this developmental stage) with a lot of illustrated examples.
SHARED WRITING: I always provide a listing of homophones for students to keep in their word study or writing folders to reference when needed. I similar to give students several opportunities to pull out their list and assist me create a few sentences using homophone pairs in the same sentence on nautical chart newspaper. I then ask students to choice a few pairs of their favorite homophones and practise the same individually, sharing their sentences with the group at the end.
Cloze exercises are great ways to elicit pupil analysis and discussion. Do a cloze exercise together using a slice of shared writing on chart paper. Embrace all of the homophones inside the slice of shared writing and work together to find which word goes with which meaning. Ask students to help you lot create nonlinguistic representations or drawings for each homophone before trying to complete the cloze exercise. PLAY GAMES: Playing games during small group meetings are perfect avenues for you to probe students' thinking and guide them to make generalizations on their own. Take students create a game of Get Fish to practice homophones. Divide up the homophones among the group. Accept each student write their words as well as draw a picture or symbol that represents the meaning of the word on individual alphabetize cards. In one case the cards are created, shuffle them and play Go Fish as a group. Students must employ the homophone correctly in a sentence when they are looking for a match. WORD STUDY NOTEBOOKS: A resource that I created equally a companion to the Words Their Way programme that I use and rely heavily on when I am meeting with my small groups is the Within Word Pattern Spellers Notebook Activities. The notebook activities go beyond traditional spelling activities and scaffold students to become into a deeper analysis of "word-studying" concepts. In the Inside Word Blueprint word study activities, students may exist asked to identify short- and long- vowel sounds, create words given a showtime sound or blend + an catastrophe (onsets + rimes), choose the correct beginning letters, vowels, or rime to complete a word, write "silly sentences" to apply the meanings of homophones, create contractions, make words plural, and more!
